Last night Boston took a heavy snowfall, but that didn’t stop us from chowing down for Alphabet Dining, Letter B. We dined at the lovely Brown Sugar Cafe, one of Bean Town’s top Thai restaurants in Allston.
Brown Sugar Cafe
Brown Sugar Cafe has been winning awards since 1998, and it shows in everything from their service, to decor, and the food itself.
Brown Sugar Fresh Rolls
To start, we were brought the signature Brown Sugar Fresh Rolls, which consisted of shrimp, shredded carrots, cucumbers, fresh lettuce and sweet basil leaves. On the side was an unbelievable house special turnip sauce, topped with crushed peanuts. I was impressed by the presentation, complete with a flower carved from a carrot.
Each ingredient was impossibly fresh and crisp. Biting into the fresh rolls, you got a great combination of meaty shrimp, crunchy carrots, and sweet basil. The turnip sauce with peanuts was sweet and delicious.
Masaman Curry
On a snowy night, warm curry is always a good decision. I went with the Masaman Curry, complete with tofu, coconut milk, potatoes, butternut squash, roasted peanuts, onions, carrots, green peppers and red peppers, and of course brown sugar.
The Masaman Curry was much more sweet than spicy, which made it absolutely delicious. It had the perfect balance of protein-filled tofu, peppers with a kick, and potatoes.
Brown Rice
A side of brown rice was great with sauce from the curry.
Panang Curry
Nick ordered the Panang Curry with chicken, coconut milk, peppers, snow peas, green peas, green beans, bamboo strips and sweet basil leaves, which was topped with roasted peanut and chopped kaffir lime leaves. It was a bit too hot for me, but is a great dish for the spice-lover.
Thai Tea
Warm Thai Tea completed the winter meal.
Overall, our experience at Brown Sugar Cafe was delightful. The service was spectacular- our water and tea were always filled and we never had to flag down a waiter. The cuisine was scrumptious and made with fresh ingredients. To top it all off, the decor was top-notch – from folded cloth napkins to giant aquariums, Christmas trees, and chandeliers. I absolutely recommend Brown Sugar to anyone looking to get their Thai cuisine fix in Boston.
